A Freshman’s Experience in 26 Vocational High School

Entering 26 vocational high school in Indonesia marks the beginning of a unique and exciting journey. As a freshman, there’s a lot to learn and adapt to, but also endless opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Here’s a glimpse into the life of an SMK student during their first year.

1. A Fresh Start in a New Environment

Stepping into high school for the first time feels like opening a new chapter. For freshmen, the transition from middle school to vocational high school can be a bit overwhelming but also thrilling. The campus is bigger, the schedules are different, and there’s a lot more freedom—but with it comes greater responsibility.
In vocational high schools, students aren’t just preparing academically; they’re also gaining practical skills in specialized fields such as technology, and engineering. This dual focus on theory and hands-on experience makes vocational education stand out from the traditional high school route (SMA).

2. Choosing a Major: A Big Decision

Unlike traditional high schools where students focus on general education, SMK students pick a major early on. This decision can be both exciting and daunting. Freshmen often rely on their interests, personal strengths, or career aspirations when choosing a major, but some are still unsure and need time to explore.
Many students feel nervous about this decision, but it’s important to remember that vocational school is about learning and discovering new passions. It’s okay to be unsure at first, and most schools provide guidance to help students make informed decisions.

3. The Day-to-Day Experience

Vocational high school life is different from the typical high school experience. Classes are divided between general education and vocational subjects. Mornings might be spent in classrooms studying math, science, or English, while afternoons could be dedicated to practical training in workshops or labs. This mix of academic learning and hands-on training gives students a well-rounded education and valuable job-ready skills.
Freshmen quickly learn to adapt to new routines—juggling homework, projects, and vocational training. The first year is all about building a strong foundation for the rest of their studies. It can be tiring at times, but students often find it rewarding as they start to see the practical applications of what they’re learning.

4. Building Friendships and Finding Support

For many freshmen, SMK is a place where they’ll make lifelong friends. The shared experience of tackling new challenges, figuring out projects, and navigating school life creates strong bonds. Seniors often act as mentors, helping freshmen find their way and offering advice on how to succeed.
Many vocational high schools in Indonesia also have extracurricular activities, from sports and arts to student organizations, which help students explore interests outside of academics and build a supportive community.

5. Facing Challenges and Staying Motivated

Like any new journey, starting vocational high school comes with challenges. The academic workload, adjusting to practical training, and dealing with the pressure of exams can sometimes feel overwhelming. However, staying organized and seeking help from teachers or peers can make a huge difference.
It’s also important for students to keep their goals in mind—whether it’s pursuing further education or entering the workforce after graduation. Knowing that they’re gaining skills that will be valuable in the real world helps freshmen stay motivated throughout the year.

6. Looking Ahead

The freshman year in an Indonesian vocational high school is all about exploration and growth. As students learn the ropes and discover their interests, they begin to develop the skills and confidence needed for the future. The hands-on experience they gain will prepare them for their careers, and the friendships they form will make the journey more enjoyable.
For any new SMK student, the road ahead might seem challenging at first, but with persistence, curiosity, and a positive attitude, this experience will become one of the most rewarding chapters in their educational journey.
After graduating i hope, i will be an full-stack Dev or a Data Scientist.

WHAT EVER THE PROSES
THE ENDING IS THAT DREAM.
